SEIMAS JUDGED THE 2011 LITHUANIAN OSCE CHAIRMANSHIP A SUCCESS

On 10 April 2012 the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania (Seimas) passed a resolution regarding the Results of Lithuania's Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2011.

The Resolution acknowledged the merits of the OSCE in promoting co-operation and developing a political dialogue across the dimensions, also in creating an ambience of security and confidence, responding to new security challenges, ensuring respect for human rights, promoting tolerance and combating all forms of racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism.

Parliamentarians qualified the Lithuanian OSCE Chairmanship as a success of the country and the national diplomatic service in further strengthening the image of Lithuania as a reliable, active and responsible member of the international community.

The document also supported the activities of the OSCE Institutions, Lithuania's Chairmanship of the OSCE Contact Group with Asian Partners for Cooperation in 2012 as well as Mongolia's application to become an OSCE participating State.

With regard to priorities of national diplomacy, the Seimas called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania to use the gained experience of Lithuania's OSCE Chairmanship in 2011 in preparation for the upcoming Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2013 and in seeking nomination of Lithuania for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council in 2014-2015.
