After Lithuania’s accession to the EU and NATO we have matured solid country’s foreign policy aiming to ensure maximum security of the state, democratic development, substantial economic and social progress, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis stated in the meeting of the heads of Lithuania’s diplomatic missions, which begun on 9 May.

“What is Eastern and what is Western policy today? We consider the Kaliningrad transit issues in Brussels and in Kiev we speak about the benefits of integration and “European perspective”. I dare say that the divide between “East” and “West” in our policy has almost disappeared, ”A.Valionis affirmed.

According to the Minister, for the country to be regarded as a serious partner we should strive to enrich European cultural heritage in Lithuania, develop the innovative technologies sector, form actively European policy, disseminate our national and European experience in the world, considering Lithuania’s historical roots and national interests.

A.Valionis noticed, that Lithuania’s diplomatic servants should not confine themselves to carrying out orders from Vilnius, but constantly unlock country’s creative potential, contribute new ideas.

The Minister proposed to prepare and submit to the Government the concept of governmental institutions’ representation abroad and coordination of their activities. According to A.Valionis this concept is necessary to appoint cultural and commercial attaché and other officials to the places where they are needed the most.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister stressed that the aim of diplomatic service is to be the flag of the state in shaping European Union’s security and foreign policy.

“We should understand clearly what is happening in Brussels, Berlin, Warsaw, Riga and in close neighbourhood – Moscow, Kiev, Minsk. And, certainly, in Washington,” - A.Valionis underlined.

According to the Minister, diplomats should take actions to widen the circle of friends and supporters in these countries.
