Lithuanian Vice-Minister for Energy during the IAEA General Conference underlined the importance of public information on nuclear safety

Lithuanian Governmental Delegation headed by the Vice-Minister for Energy Mr Rokas Baliukovas participated in the 59th IAEA General Conference on 14-18 September. Mr Baliukovas has presented a Lithuanian national statement and emphasized that nuclear energy is climate friendly and makes a significant share in a world energy mix. However, all the States have to pay full attention to the nuclear safety.

“When we talk about the future of nuclear energy, nuclear safety has to be the highest priority and the IAEA remains the most important institution that adopts worldwide standarts. Action plan of nuclear safety that was adopted during 55th General Conference has already produced concrete results: active sharing of information, building transparency and trust. All the States made the efforts in strengthening the Convention on Nuclear Safety and this year have adopted the Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety. However, challenges still remain in ensuring the effective implementation of the international conventions and highest safety standarts “, - Mr. Baliukovas has said.

Mr. Baliukovas also has stressed that each country has the right to develop nuclear energy, but international obligations on nuclear safety should be properly addressed and national decisions should be seen in a broader context of possible transboundary implications.
