Lithuanian students participate at Model OSCE Conference in Vienna
More than 140 young people from 30 OSCE participating States are coming together in Vienna to take part in the first-ever international project modelling the OSCE, taking place from 5-7 July 2008. Three students from Lithuania, Vytautas Sinica, Violeta Radzevič and Justinas Šeškevičius, lead by their teacher Lina Morkūnienė, are participating at the conference. The high school and university students will assume roles of national delegations, which were chosen by drawing lots - in this way, Lithuanian students got the role of the USA to play in the conference. Lithuanian students met with the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Rytis Paulauskas as well as with the other Lithuanian diplomats, which introduced the students to both features of international diplomacy and the USA activities within the OSCE. Lithuanian students were also introduced to the US Ambassador to the OSCE Julie Finley. During the conference its participants will seek solutions to security challenges, related to terrorism and the use of the Internet; water management in Central Asia; and trafficking of Roma children. Solutions will be sought during the simulated meetings of all of the three OSCE Committees (Politico-Military, Economic-Environmental and Human) as well as during the meetings of Preparatory Committee and Permanent Council. Similar simulation projects have been held by the United Nations, European Council and European Parliament. It is expected that Model OSCE will become a tradition in the future.
