Lithuanian Permanent Representative presented his credentials to the Director General of the IAEA
The Permanent Representative of Lithuania Amb. Giedrius Čekuolis on 26 February presented his credentials to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr. Yukiya Amano.
During the meeting, Amb. G. Čekuolis and Mr. Y. Amano exchanged views on Lithuanian-IAEA co-operation and relevant issues on the IAEA agenda.
Ambassador Čekuolis stressed that Lithuania attaches great importance to the worldwide implementation and continuous improvement of the highest standards of nuclear safety and security when building new nuclear Power Plants (NPP), especially in the immediate vicinity of Lithuania – Belarus and Kaliningrad. Ambassador pointed out that Lithuania misses the necessary transparency and good-natured sharing of information while implementing these projects. Ambassador urged the IAEA to pay constant attention to the implementation of these projects.
Director General of the IAEA noted that the Agency urges countries, implementing nuclear power plant projects to be more transparent - not only within their local communities but also with the neighbouring countries, to publish Agency’s Peer Review reports.
Ambassador and Director General also discussed Lithuanian plans on new NPP in Visaginas, Iranian nuclear issue, status quo of low-enriched uranium (LEU) bank in Kazakhstan, budget of the IAEA and other relevant issues on IAEA’s agenda.
