On 25 August, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas received new Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Lithuania Vladimir Chkhikvadze and discussed with him the situation in Georgia, important bilateral political, economic and cultural relations, the perspectives of relations between the European Union and Russia. Minister P.Vaitiekūnas indicated that Lithuanian politicians and citizens closely watched the situation in Georgia and were sensitive about the events in this country.  Lithuania strictly speaks against the use of force and military actions, and encourages finding a peaceful way to resolve the conflict. ‘Sovereignty of countries and their territorial integrity are indisputable principles of international law,’ said the head of Lithuanian diplomacy, indicating that such issues should not be solved by using force.

‘Lithuania is not looking for a contraposition in its relations with Russia. Lithuania is rather looking for positive steps to make. We have also scheduled a wide-range of constructive points on the agenda of bilateral relations, which we would like to apply to solve chronic issues,’ indicated Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas.

The interlocutors specifically discussed the perspectives of signing these bilateral agreements: an agreement on cooperation in the areas of culture, science, education and youth policy, an agreement on the maintenance of graveyards of soldiers and civilians, of victims of war and repressions. During the meeting, opinions were exchanged on the establishment of the Trust forum and Business forum and also on cooperation with the Kaliningrad region.

The new Ambassador of the Russian Federation presented his credentials to President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus on the 8 July 2008.
