LITHUANIAN EMBASSY TAKES OVER FUNCTIONS OF THE NATO CONTACT POINT EMBASSY IN GEORGIA
On 1 January, the Lithuanian Embassy in Georgia took over the functions of the NATO contact point embassy in Georgia for the period of two years.On 20 January in Tbilisi, NATO officials, representatives from the government of Georgia and foreign diplomats attended the official takeover ceremony.
"In the next two years we will try to help Georgia come closer to reaching its goal – the NATO membership - and the county’s society to learn more about the Alliance’s aims and objectives,” the Lithuanian Ambassador to Georgia Jonas Paslauskas said.One of the main functions of a contact point embassy is to disseminate information about NATO and to inform the society about its activities.
In 2011, a few tours of Lithuanian diplomats are planned to various regions of Georgia, where they will hold meetings with local residents. The diplomats also intend to communicate closely with the Georgian mass media and public institutions, and to assist in preparing a range of NATO-Georgia cooperation programs.
Lithuania took over the functions of the NATO contact embassy in Georgia from the Latvian Embassy.
Previously, Lithuania’s representations had carried out the functions of the NATO contact embassies in Belarus and Moldova.
