Lithuania had previously been elected to the IAEA Board of Governors for the 2007-2009 term.
The IAEA was established in 1957 as an independent organisation within the United Nations system with the goal of strengthening international cooperation, peace, and security in the field of nuclear energy. Currently, the IAEA has 181 member states. Lithuania joined this organisation in 1993.
