Lithuania at the IAEA Board of Governors Meeting condemned Russia's aggression in Ukraine, encouraged Director General R. Grossi to provide the necessary assistance to the country and called on Iran to cooperate with the Agency on the nuclear program
Lithuania at the IAEA Board of Governors, which took place on June 6-10, 2022, in Vienna delivered national statements on three agenda items: the implications of the situation in Ukraine for the implementation of security, safety and guarantees, the verification and monitoring of the Islamic Republic of Iran under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015) and the implementation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Lithuania in the strongest possible terms condemned the ongoing military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and its nuclear facilities and demanded Russia to immediately and unconditionally cease its military actions, withdraw all its troops from the entire territory of Ukraine, in order competent Ukrainian authorities could promptly regain full control over all its nuclear facilities within Ukraine’s internationally recognised borders. Lithuania also encouraged the Agency to put maximum efforts and the Director General to use his undoubted leadership skills to help mitigate the situation in Ukraine’s nuclear sites, in order Ukraine could regain full control over them as soon as possible.
In case of Iran, Lithuania strongly urged Iran to reverse all activities inconsistent with the JCPOA and return, without any further delay, to its full implementation, including of all transparency measures. This is essential to prove the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme. Timely and full cooperation with the IAEA remains absolutely crucial. Lithuania is also gravely concerned about Iran’s hesitation to provide technically credible explanations and reliable information in relation to the Agency’s findings at the undeclared locations as it raises major concerns that some nuclear activities, nuclear material and/or equipment contaminated with nuclear material was not declared by Iran to the IAEA as required under Iran’s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.
