Lithuania and United Nations will Cooperate Closer in Combating Drugs and Trafficking in Human Beings
At the end of his working visit to the Austrian capital with the purpose of strengthening Lithuania’s activities in the international organizations, President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus met with Mr. Antonio Maria Costa, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Director-General of the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV). The meeting focused on international efforts to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan and attempts to block drug trafficking routes in Europe. The Lithuanian Head of State noted that our country was leading the Province Reconstruction Team in the Ghor Province in Afghanistan and put big emphasis on corruption prevention and law enforcement projects. Mr. Costa said that Lithuania’s contribution in helping people of Afghanistan to get back to normal life was very important. Participants of the meeting agreed that Lithuanian and the UN representatives in Vienna and Kabul would cooperate closer in implementing joint projects. The Director-General of the United Nations Office in Vienna noted that efforts are needed in separate regions in combating drug production and trafficking more. It was highlighted that the international community and societies of different states should pay more attention to fight against trafficking in human beings. Lithuania was invited to participate more actively in international initiatives aimed at eliminating such criminal phenomenon humiliating dignity of people and violating their rights. On Thursday evening President Adamkus met with different foreign Ambassadors residing in Vienna and working in the international organizations located in the Austrian capital.
