At IAEA Board of Governors meeting Lithuania demanded Russia ends its illegal actions and withdraw its forces from Ukraine's nuclear power plants and other nuclear objects

At the meeting of the ordinary IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna, Austria, on 7-11 March, Lithuania, in support to most Western states, condemned Russia's criminal actions in discrediting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and placing the whole world on the brink of a nuclear disaster.

"Russia must end its illegal actions and withdraw its forces from Ukraine's nuclear power plants," a Lithuanian representative stressed.

Lithuania also called on the Director-General of the IAEA to take immediate leadership to ensure the protection of the territory around all nuclear facilities in Ukraine from any military action and to regain full control of the facilities by the Ukrainian authorities. Lithuania has expressed its determination to contribute to any support that it could provide to Ukraine together with other ENSREG members.

When the Russian representative began his speech, representatives of all EU Member States and like-minded countries left the room in the name of protest.

The Board of Governors of the IAEA is the governing body, with 35 members elected on a rotating basis, in accordance with the formula laid down in the Statute of the IAEA. Lithuania is not a member of the Board of Governors, therefore takes part in its activities as observer.
